The Worshipful Company of Pattenmakers Young Manager Award

The Worshipful Company of Pattenmakers Young Manager Award, supported by RICS, is one of many facilities management awards that is on offer each year. To be honest it is probably one of the least well-known.

It’s actually very different from the other awards. Entrants must be nominated by their employer. Entry is free. There is no glitzy awards ceremony (though the winner does get to meet the Lord Mayor of London). And most important of all, the winner receives a small bursary as well as expert support to create a personal development programme, in consultation with their employer.

Career development opportunities

The award is designed for employers in the facilities management sector, to help them identify, motivate and develop young managers who they believe will rise to the very top in their industry. It’s much more than just an accolade for the winner, though it is that too of course. The tailored package of off-site courses and work placements gives both the employer and the winning manager a unique opportunity for career development, unmatched by any other award.

Whenever I talk to employers about it, it’s always this element – access to contacts and work placements in some of the world’s leading companies – that generates the most excitement, and which makes this award so different.

The reason I know so much about it is because for the last two years I’ve been privileged to be one of the four judges on the panel, tasked with whittling around 30 entrants down to one worthy winner. It’s an honour to be involved again this year, alongside returning judges Kath Fontana, Richard Muir, and Martin Pickard.

We’ve been impressed with the calibre of entrants in recent years, many of whom have specialised in a particular discipline within facilities management. There’s a reason the candidates are so good. All of them have been nominated by their employer, and in each case their line manager will have written a letter of support citing why they think they are deserving of the award.

Whether they win or not, the feedback from the finalists invited to interview demonstrates that they found the process rewarding, not least because of the public support they’ve received from their employers.

Pattenmakers Young Manager Award 2018

The Worshipful Company of Pattenmakers is one of the historic Livery Companies of the City of London with its origins dating back to the 14th century. In recent years the Company has become the Livery home of the facilities management industry and of professionals from across the built environment sector, in addition to its traditional membership from City institutions and the footwear industry.

The Company operates two Young Manager’s Award schemes which provide career development support to deserving young managers, including one each year from the Facilities Management and Built Environment sector.

The Award will be presented to the winner by the Lord Mayor of London at the Pattenmakers’ Annual Banquet, in the Mansion House in January 2018 along with a small financial bursary kindly donated by Glennister Associates. They will also receive the Freedom of the Livery with the opportunity to apply for the Freedom of the City of London at a later stage.

How to enter

This is an ideal opportunity to encourage the development of enthusiastic and deserving young people within the facilities management sector.  

The nomination form can be downloaded here. Entries must be made in writing using the nomination form, which should be emailed to liz@fmguru.co.uk, with an accompanying letter of support from a director for each entrant.

Employers can enter as many young managers as they want, and there is no entry fee.

The closing date for receipt of nominations is 20 October 2017.

The judges are looking for someone who:

  • Is enthusiastic about a career in FM or the built environment
  • Can demonstrate their commitment to their own personal development
  • Has potential for future promotion to a senior role
  • Has a high standard of professional ethics
  • Has or has had managerial responsibility (people, facilities or other resources)
  • Can demonstrate initiative
  • Displays leadership behaviours inside and outside of the workplace
  • Is aged 21-32
  • Has the support of their director (or equivalent)

Finalists will be invited to an interview with the judges on 17 November in central London. There is also a Young Pattenmakers’ Dinner the same evening, to which all interviewees will be invited, although attendance is optional.
