And the winner is...

Workplace Law would like to extend its warmest congratulations to Nobia UK and Darlington college, who have together won the 'Partnership Initiative of the year' award at this year's IOSH SHP awards, announced on Thursday 18 October.

Fighting off fierce competition from the other shortlisted entrants, this partnership saw Darlington-based kitchen manufacturers, Nobia UK, team up with Darlington College, putting 16 of its staff through an industry qualification in health and safety.  The Magnet warehouse workers studied for an NVQ in warehousing and storage with Darlington College.

The course was delivered at the site of Magnet’s Darlington factory, by way of a tailored training programme, fitting in with workers’ shift patterns.  The course covered a multitude of health and safety issues, standard operating procedures and working relationships.  It was designed to boost efficiency, ensure staff safety and to furnish workers with a recognised qualification to further enhance their career prospects as well as giving them transferrable skills.

Magnet stock controller, Dave Nelson, who has worked in the industry for 32 years, commented on the course:

“It was a really good course and I felt I learned a lot.  It will help us in our day-to-day work and it has made me much more aware of a range of possible hazards. The company does place a lot of emphasis on training which is great for us all.”

Kevin Jones, Logistics Process Improvement Manager, added:

“This NVQ can be used to good effect on the shop floor but it can also help staff move up the career ladder as it shows commitment and a keen interest in the job.”

Over the past two years Darlington College has worked closely with Magnet, delivering a range of flexible training.  As well as the NVQ in warehousing and storage, the College delivers an NVQ in Retailing and Logistics Operations.

The other finalists included Hi-impact Photography & Consultancy and Bedford Drive Primary School, Manchester Central and Visual Emergency First Aid, and Nationwide Platforms and Skanska, all of whom put together fabulous partnership campaigns. Congratulations to all.
