Brexit: health and safety during the transition period

The UK has now left the EU. A transition period is in place while the EU and UK negotiate new arrangements for a trade deal, which will end on 31 December 2020.
In the meantime, the HSE has emphasised that employers’ responsibility to protect the health and safety of people affected by their work activities remains the same during the transition period, and you should continue to manage risk in your business in a proportionate way.
The HSE’s guidance Health and safety made simple: the basics for your business will help businesses to continue to comply with the law during this period. It includes guidance on:
- Appointing a competent person to manage health and safety in your business;
- Preparing a health and safety policy;
- First aid in work;
- Displaying the law poster;
- Risk assessment;
- Consulting your workers;
- Getting insurance for your business
- The law;
- Providing information and training;
- Having the right workplace facilities; and
- Reporting accidents and illness.
