Data Protection: A Guide for Employers
The Workplacelaw Network - in association with Bird & Bird solicitors - is organising a legal seminar to help members to get to grips with the new Code of Practice on employment practices. The seminar will take place in central London on 9 May 2002.
The Information Commissioner's Office is in the process of finalising a four part Code which will set out what employers must do to comply with the Data Protection Act 1998. The first part of the Code - dealing with recruitment and selection - was published in mid-March. The remaining parts will be published over the coming months. The Code will set out detailed standards relating to recruitment and selection, records maintenance, monitoring and testing which the Information Commissioner will expect all organisations using personal data to follow.
Failure to comply with the Code is likely to mean that an organisation is in breach of the Act, which could lead to enforcement action by the Information Commissioner or claims for compensation by individuals. In some cases, breach of the Act is a criminal offence. Failure to comply with the Code is also likely to be considered in tribunal proceedings.
This event - Data Protection: A Guide for Employers - will provide an overview of the Data Protection Act, will give delegates an understanding of the status of the Code and the key provisions in the Code and will conclude with practical comments as to how to comply with Code and what happens if an organisation does not comply.
The seminar takes place on 9 May 2002 in central London, starting at 5pm. Places cost £25 – to book your place, please call our friendly membership services team on 0870 777 0202. Please note that places are strictly limited to 50 delegates, so members are advised to book early.
