Let Workplace Law ensure your remain compliant during Fire Door Safety Week

Hero’s that save lives and properties – of course firefighters up and down the country deserve this accolade; however it is easy to forget that fire doors, if installed correctly and are fully compliant with regulations, also do that job.

Fire Door Safety Week, which runs from 15-21 September, is all about raising awareness of this critical element of fire safety in every type of commercial, public and multiple occupancy building.

Did you know that fire doors provide critical protection within a building, such as escape routes (stairs and corridors) and places of relative safety, and in separating different fire hazards in a building?

However, just because you have fire doors in place, it doesn’t mean you are safe - if they are incorrectly fitted, they pose a grave danger to you and your property.

While three million new fire doors are bought and installed every year in the UK, it appears not everyone is aware of the regulations. In a survey among fire risk assessors, 80% of escape routes were obstructed, 65% of fire doors were wedged open and 85% had door closers disconnected. Remember that leaving fire doors wedged or propped open disregards the safety of others and is also against the law.

In a recent review of 100 cases prosecuted under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, fire doors were the second highest reason for prosecutions, demonstrating the fact that far too many people are still unaware of what is required of them.

Fire Door Safety Week is the perfect time to ensure that your doors are compliant under the regulations and Workplace Law can help you do this.
