Workplace Law research study looks at training matrices

Workplace Law recently conducted a survey looking at organisations’ training matrices, asking respondents to tell us  what they included in a training matrix for health and safety, and to tell us how those training needs were identified.

Specifically, we wanted to find out what the minimum requirement was for those taking on roles, and what the expectations were for training to be completed within six months to a year.

Businesses are becoming more sophisticated in managing and organising training. Increasingly, delivery is centralised in a learning and development function. As well as making it easier to manage costs, this also helps organisations plan their training activity, develop talent, ensure competency and support compliance. Inevitably, there is always potential for tension between those 'at the coal face' and the centre.

The key planning tool is the training matrix, which at its simplest, is a list of roles mapped against the training expected of individuals in those roles.

Results show IOSH Managing Safely as a mandatory requirement in a number of roles, while NEBOSH National General Certificate was also prominent.

Some 60% of respondents had responsibilities for environmental management as well as health and safety, and as a result it is no surprise to see the IEMA Foundation Certificate listed.

Appraisals remain the principal way of identifying training needs and competency levels required for roles (more than 77% of respondents). This activity is complemented by other methods including risk assessment, legal compliance assessments and role profiling.
