When searching for a new job, some candidates may be less than scrupulous at recording their achievements. From fibbing about past positions, to exaggerating qualifications, there are many ways in which a CV can be embellished or fabricated for personal gain. If you are managing the hiring process, this may present a challenge for you - when faced with a mountain of CVs how can you tell what is fact from fiction? The top 10 CV frauds are:

  1. Stretching their working dates: People often stretch their working dates to increase their span of experience. This is something which you may find in a lot of resumes so beware about this.
  2. Misguiding about past skills and accomplishments: People tend to increase their record of past skills and accomplishments. They may add something that is not too much relevant to your job requirements.
  3. Job titles and responsibilities: The candidates may represent their job titles in a way that they may look bigger than they actually were. They may also add up a responsibility which was not on their shoulders.
  4. Extending educational background: For any job, the education is considered compulsory. People are likely to add up a number of ‘extraordinary’ details in their CV’s just to impress you.
  5. Self-Employment: There will be various people who may add up the period of self-employment in their CV. This will be there to cover up the time span of unemployment.
  6. Omitting previous employment: No one leaves an employment until he or she has a second one on hand. So if someone has listed the “omitted past job” in his or her CV, do question the reason.
  7. Faking the credentials: To make a good impression on you, people may have faked their credentials. This isn’t too common however certain people may be there who will try to deceive you.
  8. False reasons for leaving previous jobs: Often candidates who list “omitted previous employment” will try to provide you with certain false reasons why they quit their previous position. So beware of this trap as well and try to uncover the truth.
  9. Providing false references: You might not be able to reach all references. Keeping this in view, candidates may provide you with false references.
  10. Misrepresenting military records: Everyone pays respect to military candidates and there are often great incentives provided to them. Therefore, people may have misrepresented their military details to make their chances of getting a job stronger.
